My first day....

Hello. :) I decided, like many artists who want to create a BJD, to keep a blog of my progress. This will mostly be for my own perusal, and I'm sure that I'll eventually look back at it and laugh at how naive I am about this whole process. I guess with no further ado, I will begin my journey!

I've tried to start sculpting a BJD head a few times before. I did a lot of research back then, making sure I picked up the "best" clay for the job and followed all the other artists' advice and technique. What I've learned about that method now is that... it just didn't work for me! Not only was I trying to do something very difficult, I was trying to do it someone else's way. I was using La Doll air dry clay back then, and the whole thing just looked like a wet sack of newspaper with holes for eyes. Maybe if I can get a picture of that scary scary thing I started to make later I will.... or maybe I will spare myself and any one who stumbles by this place. ^^;

Yesterday I decided to start again from scratch. I ignored all outcry against using a tinfoil base and did it. I grabbed my Super Sculpey and started building a surface. Even knowing the pitfalls of using Sculpey as a head material, I just had to try!

Sculpting a head is so fun. The subtleties of features, of muscle and fat, is amazing! I can almost feel myself learning as I go along, trial and error. After a while I had this guy on the left, and after some more refining, this boy on the right :). I think things are coming along! I haven't used any tools but for the little metal guy you can see on my desk in the second picture.

My next step is to go ahead and get some alcohol or Sculpey Softener to start working on finer details and to start evening everything up properly. I think I'll also need to go and get some other tools. :)

Until next time!!!!
